Advanced, Minimally Invasive Surgical Options for Pets

At Litchfield Veterinary Hospital, we combine Fear Free medicine with state-of-the-art technology and ongoing staff training to bring the latest advancements in veterinary surgery to every patient.

We are proud to offer laparoscopic spays and a variety of other minimally invasive procedures — including cryptorchid neuters, laparoscopic liver biopsies, and laparoscopic-assisted gastropexy — as alternatives to traditional open surgery. Also known as “keyhole surgery,” laparoscopy has been successfully used in both human and veterinary medicine for decades, offering a safer and less invasive option for pets.

What Is a Laparoscopic Spay?

In a traditional spay, a single larger incision is made in the abdomen to remove both the uterus and ovaries. With a laparoscopic spay, only the ovaries are removed through two to three very small incisions. A tiny camera and specialized instruments are used, which means less cutting, less suturing, and less overall trauma to tissues.

Other Laparoscopic Procedures

  • Cryptorchid Neuters: Safely locate and remove retained testicles that remain inside the abdomen.
  • Laparoscopic Liver Biopsies: Allow for precise tissue sampling with minimal discomfort and faster recovery, aiding in the accurate diagnosis of liver conditions.
  • Laparoscopic-Assisted Gastropexy: Performed to prevent life-threatening gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV or “bloat”) in at-risk breeds by securing the stomach to the abdominal wall.

Benefits of Laparoscopic Surgery

Choosing a laparoscopic procedure offers several advantages for your pet:

  • Reduced tissue trauma compared to open surgery
  • Less bruising and irritation at the surgical site
  • Lower post-operative pain
  • Faster recovery time — often about half that of open surgery
  • Reduced risk of post-operative infection

Traditional Spay & Neuter Procedures

While laparoscopic surgery offers many benefits, there are times when a traditional spay or neuter may be recommended due to specific medical needs or by owner preference. Traditional surgery is widely available, typically less expensive, and routinely performed by small animal veterinarians with excellent outcomes.

Regardless of the method chosen, both laparoscopic and traditional surgeries are safe, effective, and essential in helping pets live longer, healthier lives.
