Dr. Rachel Ammirata

Dr. Ammirata grew up in Litchfield County, riding horses and collecting numerous cats, dogs and reptiles.  She first lived in Southbury, then Roxbury where she graduated from Shepaug in Washington Depot. Dr. Ammirata's love for medicine came from her father's career as a pharmacist.  She developed a love of travel from her experiences as a young child while travelling throughout Connecticut with her mother's business.

Dr. Ammirata graduated from Western Connecticut State University with a Bachelors in biology.  She went on to study at North Carolina State University where she received a masters degree in Animal Science.  In 2016 she graduated from Kansas State University with her veterinary degree and was inducted into the Phi Zeta honor society.  During her clinical rotations at KSU, Dr. Ammirata was awarded the pet tribute scholarship for animal compassion.  She has a strong interest in soft tissue surgery as well as dentistry and neurology.

Dr. Ammirata is always interested in improving techniques and developing new skills.  She will scour through every available resource from standard textbooks and peer reviewed journals to online forums and communities that would better connect her with people more experienced with the issue of interest.

Dr. Ammirata has been riding horses since she was ten years old, staring with hunter jumpers, then switching to AQHA in 2007.  She competed regularly until her acceptance to veterinary school.  She plans to continue riding her beloved horse, Maggie, for years to come.  She also shares her home with her husband, her Jack Russell, Brady, her Australian Shepherd, Foster, her cats, Cash and June, and her bearded dragon Leo.

When Dr. Ammirata isn't with her patients, she and her husband, Michael, enjoy afternoon hikes with their dogs, visiting Connecticut farms and attractions, and occasional road trips and getaways.  She backpacked across Europe while in college, and took a three week road trip through 25 states immediately after her graduation from Kansas State.

Dr. Ammirata is always excited for the next Disney Pixar Film.  She enjoys getting involve in the community and participating with humane societies and rescues.  She is happy to attend whatever fundraiser she can fit into her schedule.
